A Cup of Change 10.10.2024

October 10, 2024

A few decades ago, it was common for churches to have an official position known as “Parish Nurse.” This person was responsible for thinking about the health and wellbeing of the congregation. Sometimes they would even be open for office hours where folks could come in and seek advice on a variety of matters.

For almost twenty-nine years, Debra Norris has served as our Parish Nurse. Okay, sure, her business card had a different title (Ministry Assistant for Communication and Missions), but “Parish Nurse” certainly would have fit. Because as much as we have valued Debra for her skillful use of technology, her clear communication strategies, and her willingness to problem solve anything, it is her caring and self-sacrificial spirit that has truly been a gift to us at Ardmore Baptist Church.

As many of you know, Debra is not only deeply caring, she is incredibly brave. She served as a nurse in Gaza. As the violence escalated in Gaza over the past couple of years, Debra could often be seen checking on former students and tearfully telling us about the destruction of beloved places she frequented. Her compassion and love for the people of Gaza is still so evident. Doesn’t that speak volumes of Debra’s heart?

Debra has also been very devoted to her family. She loved and revered her father, Bill (he passed away months before I started at Ardmore; how I wish I could have known him). She protects and honors her mother, she loves her sisters, she cares for her nieces/nephews, and she even tolerates her brother-in-law, Russell! 😊

For us on Staff, Debra is the person who will stop us in the hall and say, “Hey, you look tired. Do not work too hard. You need to rest.” She is our go-to person for any aches or pains; she provides any medications we might need (over the counter, of course!). To put it clearly: She takes care of us. We are really going to miss Debra’s presence on Staff, but we are grateful she remains a part of our church family.

Debra, we love you. And thank you for twenty-nine years of hard work and dedication.

Thank you, my friend.

Pastor Tyler

All of the staff from the church is gathering for a lunch in Debra’s honor on Tuesday, October 14. As a congregation we will honor Debra in worship on Sunday, October 20.
