Who is the wisest person you have ever known? Sometimes we are naturally drawn to linking intelligence with wisdom, but life experience will tell us that there are some wise sages with very little education – just as there are some real fools with doctorates.

Because wisdom is not what you know; wisdom is how you live. During the summer, we are going to spend some time exploring the question, “What does it mean to be wise?” Each week we will look at wisdom in a certain area of our lives and how we can grow further into wisdom.

In fact, this summer we will have a congregational emphasis on wisdom. In addition to our Sunday morning worship services, our youth will also be exploring the idea of wisdom as Dane leads them through a series of studies (followed by a kickball game) called “Wisdom with a Kick.”

Our guide throughout the summer will be the Book of Proverbs. It can be a difficult book to read; it can come across as a random collection of fortune cookie slips taped together. But Proverbs has a common theme of seeking wisdom in all facets of our being. Ultimately, we will see that the path of wisdom leads us further and further into the heart of God.

Also, if you are looking for some resources on what it means to be wise, I recommend the book Wiser: The Scientific Roots of Wisdom, Compassion, and What Makes Us Good by Dilip Jeste. Additionally, Dr. Jeste has developed a survey to “measure” wisdom in different facets of your life. Take this survey for an interesting way to explore wisdom in your own life: Jeste-Thomas Wisdom Scale.

I hope you will be able to join us for worship this summer as we explore the idea of Wisdom together:
