Exposed Trusses
The early churches featured a central hall known as a nave. This title refers to the exposed structure overhead which reminded early worshippers of the structure found in the bottom of a ship. The ship has long been used as a symbol of the church afloat in the world. The open trusswork also provides a strong vertical dimension which calls worshippers to lift up their eyes heavenward.
